Today\u2019s sugar consumption<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Today, an average person consumes 1 kg of sugar each week. A continual rise of sugar intake<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Over the last 20 years, sugar consumption in the United States has increased from 12 kgs to more than 60 kilos of sugar per person per year. Sugar is part of more foods than we think<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Sugar consumption includes highly refined sugars that are incorporated into many of the foods we eat (bread, peanut butter, condiments, sauces, etc.). Some of these are better known as sucrose (table sugar), dextrose (corn sugar), and high-fructose corn syrup.   <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/home\/?status=%20%22Sugar%20is%20part%20of%20more%20foods%20than%20we%20think%20such%20as%20bread%20or%20sauces%22%20via%20@shawellness%20https:\/\/pre.shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/en\/8-things-we-should-know-about-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>4. Four types of sugar<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>There are 4 classes of simple sugars (<strong>sucrose, fructose, honey, and malts<\/strong>) are deemed \u201charmful\u201d to optimal health when long-term consumption is over 15% of carbohydrate calories ingested.  Our advice: eating complex carbohydrates (veggies, beans, legumes, whole grains) is the best way to keep this number below 15%.   <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/home\/?status=%20%22Eating%20complex%20carbohydrates%20is%20the%20best%20way%20to%20control%20sugar%20levels%22%20via%20@shawellness%20https:\/\/pre.shawellness.com\/shamagazine\/en\/8-things-we-should-know-about-sugar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>5. Sugar is a health issue<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Simple sugars have been documented to contribute to and\/or aggravate health problems, including: asthma, mood disorders, mental illness, nervous disorders, diabetes, heart disease, gallstones, hypertension, and arthritis.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>6. Insulin impacts and sugar<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Sugar raises insulin levels, inhibiting the release of growth hormones which depresses the immune system.  Further, too much insulin promotes the storage of fat, so that when you eat foods that are high in sugar, you\u2019re enabling rapid weight gain and elevated triglyceride levels, both of which have been linked to cardiovascular disease.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>7.
